Manage the question bank

The Question bank is a database of quiz questions created when setting up a quiz or imported from another unit. Questions can also be created directly inside the Question bank and added to your Quiz.

In the main page of your unit, click on your Quiz.
In the top banner menu, click on Question bank.
OR
From the Unit level menu, select More, and then click on Question bank.

The Question Bank lists your questions, and allows you to sort them by a range of criteria and access them directly to edit. Questions can be sorted by name, time of creation, creator, usage, date modified. The main view is customisable, and you can hide columns you do not use by clicking the three dots next to the column header.

Search and filter options allow you to locate questions quickly.

Questions can also be sorted into Categories. This is not just good for organisation, Categories can also be used with the random question option to ensure random selections are taken from an appropriate subset of your overall questions.

Expand the accordions to learn more

It is always a good idea to first set up your categories before creating your question. To do so, follow these steps.
1. From the Question bank tab, Select the Categories from the dropdown list and click Add category.
2. Expand the Add category section.
3. Select a parent category for your new category from the dropdown list.
4. Provide a name and description for your category.
5. If you would like to embed quiz questions from this category in Moodle, ensure that you enter an ID number. You may even wish to create a new category specifically for questions you would like to embed in Moodle.
  Note: IDs are limited to 100 characters, and should not include slashes or spaces. It is recommended that you use numbers or upper and lower-case letters characters. Dashes (-) or underscores (_) may also be included.
6. Click Add category.
To edit an existing category:
1. From the Question bank tab, Select the Categories tab from the drop down list.
2. For the category you would like to edit, click on the three dots. From here you can edit, delete, move, or download the whole category.
3. The category can be given a name, category information, or moved in your hierarchy. Categories can also be moved by dragging and dropping.
4. Once you are finished making changes, click Save changes.
Once you have created your categories, you can start populating your questions.
1. From the Question bank tab, select the Questions from the dropdown list.
2. Select a category from the drop down list.
3. Once selected, you will also see a list of questions already in the chosen category.
4. Click Create a new question ...
5. Choose a question type, select a question type to see its description, then click Add.
6. If you would like to embed the quiz question in Moodle, ensure that you enter an ID number.

7. Once created, the new question will be listed automatically in the Question bank.
  You can:
  - Move questions to a different category: Select one or more questions with the check boxes beside the question. Click With selected and select Move to... and select a category from the drop down list.
  - Delete multiple questions:Select one or more questions with the check boxes beside the question. Click With selected and select Delete.
8. For individual questions, the editing options are under the Edit dropdown.
  You can:
  - Edit the question
  - Duplicate the question
  - Manage tags
  - Preview the question
  - View the question history
  - Delete the question
  - Export the question as an XML file
1. From the Question bank tab, select Import from the dropdown.
2. Select the File format.
3. In General, select the category you would like to import to from the Import category drop down list.
4. In Import questions from file, choose a file by dragging a file into the dotted area or click Choose a file..., then Upload this file.
5. Click Import.

2. Select the File format.
3. In General, select a category you would like to export from the Export category drop down list.
4. Click Export questions to file.
