Grade a Quiz

Most question types can be graded automatically with general feedback and feedback in the quiz settings. To set up general feedback for automatically graded questions types:

  1. Click on the settings icon in the top right of your quiz and select Edit quiz.
  2. For the question you would like to add feedback for, click on the settings icon.
  3. Edit the general feedback and correct/incorrect feedback fields.
  4. Click Save.

Short answer and Essay type questions require you to enter manual feedback once the student has completed the quiz. You can provide manual feedback for Short answer and Essay type questions in two ways:

  • Review by question: Use this method if you want to grade the same question for all students and then move on to the next question; grading by question.
  • Review by student quiz: Use this method if you want to grade one quiz at a time for each student; grading by student.

Review by question

  1. Click on the Settings icon in the top right of your Quiz.
  2. Click on Manual grading.
  3. On the Questions that need grading page, click grade all to manually grade ungraded attempts.
  4. Enter the feedback and grade required, then Save and go to next page next student’s response).
  5. When you have finished, click Back to list of questions.

Review by student quiz

  1. Click on the Settings icon in the top right corner of your Quiz.
  2. Click on Results.
    Note: If no attempts have been made to Results will have no entries.
  3. You can review an individual student's quiz attempts by clicking the Review attempt link under the student's name. While you are reviewing, you can provide manual feedback or override a score.
  4. Click Make comment or override mark for questions that need manual grading.
  5. Enter a comment and a mark, before clicking Save.
  6. Once you have finished adding manual feedback, click Finish review in the Quiz navigation panel.

View Quiz reports

Moodle Quiz reports provides you with an array of information regarding the quiz. It allow you to get:

  • Grades report: This shows you the students quiz attempts, overall grade and the grade for each question. You can even filter by student.
  • Responses report: This one is similar to the Grades report, but has an additional functionality which allows you to view the responses students have for each question. This is helpful when using randomised questions.
  • Statistics report: This report is more of a psychometric analysis of the quiz and questions themselves. It shows you a summary of the quiz including attempts, average of grades and standard deviation. This report can help you find broken questions, check random variants, and see how students are responding to a particular question.
  • Manual grading report: This report focuses on all questions that require a manual grade. This is also where you may want to go to manually change the grade as well.

Generate reports as a CSV

You can generate reports about the results of your quiz and export them as comma separated values text files (CSV).

  1. Click on the Settings icon () in the top right of your Quiz.
  2. Under Results, click on Statistics or Responses.
  3. Select comma separated values text file (.CSV) from Download table data as to export the data as a CSV file.
  4. Open the report in Microsoft Excel to see each student's individual results.
