Use Zoom polling
Zoom offers a number of real-time polling options to engage your students during the Zoom meeting. Simple polls include multiple choice questions, while advanced poll questions include matching, ranked order, short/long answer, fill in the blank and rating scales. This guide shows you how to set polls up and run them during your Zoom sessions.
Check that advanced polls are enabled in your Zoom settings
- Navigate to Monash.zoom.us.
- Sign in with your Monash authcate details.
- In Settings, click on In Meeting (Basic).
- Under Meeting Polls/Quizzes, check the Allow host to create advanced polls and quizzes checkbox.
- Click save.
Note: You can also optionally choose to enable Allow alternative host to create advanced polls and quizzes. This will allow co-hosts you have added to the Zoom meeting to create or edit polls.
Create Zoom polls
- Navigate to Monash.zoom.us.
- Sign in with your Monash authcate details.
- Click on Meetings to view your scheduled meetings. You can only add polls to meetings that have been scheduled.
- Click on the name of your Zoom meeting to view meeting details.
- Scroll down to the bottom of the page to the Polls/Quizzes section.
- Click +Create and choose whether you would like to create a poll (simple multiple choice) or an advanced poll/quiz (matching, rank order, short/long answer, fill in blank, scale).

Run polls during the Zoom meeting
- In your Zoom meeting, click on the Polls/Quiz icon. The Polls/Quiz icon will only appear if you have created polls for your Zoom meeting.
- Select the poll you wish to run from the dropdown menu.
- Once selected, you will see a preview of the poll as it will appear to your Zoom meeting participants.
- Click Launch to start your poll.
- While the poll is open, the poll window will display a timer showing the time elapsed since the poll was opened and the number of participants who have completed the poll. For each question, you will be able to see participant responses.
- When ready, click End Poll to close the poll. Participants will no longer be able to respond.
- Once closed, you can choose to share poll results with the meeting participants by clicking Share results. Click Stop sharing to stop sharing the poll.
- When ready to move on from the poll, close the poll window.
Note: Poll responses are not stored, if you close the poll and relaunch the poll, past participant responses will not be saved.
Review polls results
You can generate a report in Zoom to download a .CSV file on your Zoom poll results. Please note, if you launched the same poll more than once during the Zoom meeting, only participant responses in the latest poll will be included in the report.
- Click on Reports and then click Meeting.
- In Report Type, select Poll Report. Adjust the time frame to include the date your Zoom meeting occurred and click Search.
- For the Zoom meeting that includes the poll you would like to review the results for, click Generate.
- You will be redirected to the Report Queue automatically. Once generated, click Download to download the poll report as a .CSV file.
