Assignment grading overview

The grading overview page provides an overview of all students attached to an assignment. From the assignment grading overview, you can perform a range of actions related to assignment submissions, for example you can download assignment files, regrade an assignment, allow another attempt, grant an extension or revert a submission back to draft status.

Navigate to the assignment you would like to view.
From your Assignment’s Grading summary page, click the on Submissions tab.

Click on the plus icons to learn more about the Assignment grader interface

- Status: You can see the submission status of an assignment i.e. No submission, Submitted, Reopened, ect.
- Last modified (submission): You can see when the assignment was submitted
- File submissions: Any files that have been submitted will appear as a downloadable link
- Grade: For the student assignment you would like to grade, click the three dots in the Grade column, then click Grade.
  For more information, see Grader interface.
- Submission comments: Comments noting extensions, late submissions ect. appear in this column.
- Annotate PDF: If the student has submitted a PDF, and you have marked it with the PDF mark up and annotation tools, the marked up version will appear as a link. For more information about marking PDF submissions, see PDF marking and annotation.
- Once a submission has been graded, the last modified (grade), feedback comment and final grade columns will become populated.
- Automated late penalty applied (Moodle assignment only):Once an automated late penalty has been applied to a grade (Moodle assignments only), it will be marked for both teachers and students with a small red alert icon. Mousing over this icon will reveal the applied penalty.
- Filter by group:If enabled in the assignment activity settings, you can use the separate groups dropdown list to quickly sort assignment submissions into groups.
- Filter by name: You can use the alphabet letters to filter students by first name and surname. Please note that filters DO NOT reset automatically. Ensure that you clear your filters so that you can view all student submissions after you are finished.
- Filter by status:Use the Status drop down list to filter submissions by submitted, not submitted, requires grading, granted extension and drafts.
- Advanced options: In the advanced options, you can choose to hide suspended participants from the assignment grader overview. By default suspended participants are included.
- Quick grading: Quick grading allows you to perform a number of grading actions for multiple student assignments at once from the grading overview page, such as:
  - Entering grades
  - Add submission comments
  - Add Feedback comments. Unsaved comments will be highlighted orange.
  - Assign markers and marking workflow statuses, if marker allocation and marking workflow have been enabled.
- Actions: From the Actions drop down, you can view the gradebook or download all submissions.
- With selected...: You can select one or more assignment submissions with the checkboxes in the left most column. Once selected, you can choose a number of different actions which include:
  - lock
  - unlock
  - download
  - allow another attempt
  - revert to draft status
  - send email
  - set marking workflow state and set allocated marker (if marker allocation has been enabled).

Assignment grader overview actions

For the student assignment you would like to grade, click the three dots in the Grade column, then click Grade.
1. Click on the Status dropdown at the top of the page.
2. Select Requires grading. The page will automatically refresh.
3. You can now proceed to mark, comment and download all the submissions based on your filtered option of ‘Requires Grading’.
4. All students who have not made a submission will not appear in the ‘require grading’.
  Note: Filters DO NOT reset automatically. Ensure that you clear your filters so that you can view all student submissions after you are finished.
You can download assignment submissions in a number of ways, depending on whether you would like to download an individual, multiple or all assignments.
By default, the download submissions in folders checkbox is ticked. All assignments will be downloaded as a zipped file with the filenames preceded by the students name.
Note
Any uploaded marks will not have automated late penalties applied.
Download individual submissions
1. Click on the file link in the File submissions column for an individual student.
Download multiple submissions
1. Select multiple students with the checkboxes in the Select column
  OR
  Select all students listed with the checkbox in the Select column headers.
2. You can also choose to filter groups of students using the Select visible groups drop down list or Status drop down list.
3. From the icons at the bottom of the page, select Download.
Download ALL submissions
1. In your Moodle unit, navigate to the Moodle assignment that you would like to bulk download student submissions.
2. Click on View all submissions.
3. From the actions drop down list, choose Download all submissions button which appears on the right hand side of the screen.
  Note: By default, the Download submissions in folders checkbox is ticked. All student submissions will be downloaded as individual zip files.
When marking large cohorts, you can filter assessments by groups, for example the Allocate+ tutorial group, and then download assignment submissions in bulk.
1. Click on the Select visible groups drop down menu. Choose the group that you want to view.
2. Once selected, only submissions from the students in the selected group will be displayed on screen.
3. From the actions drop down list, choose Download all submissions button which appears on the right hand side of the screen.
  Note: By default, the Download submissions in folders checkbox is ticked. All student submissions will be downloaded as individual zip files.
4. A pop-up will appear that will prompt you to save the zip package containing all group assessment submissions.
5. Click Save File and then select OK to download the zip package to your computer.
6. With the zip package downloaded to your computer, unzip the package, where the assessment submissions can then be accessed for marking. Moodle will automatically rename each file submission with the students’ name.
  Note: It is recommended that you save the zip package into a selected folder instead of your Desktop or downloads folder. This way when you extract the files, they will be located within a specific folder place, making it easier to locate and manage the files.
Note: If the Visible groups drop down menu is not displaying, group mode will need to be enabled for the activity. For more information, see Common module settings: Group mode (Separate groups).
You can return assessment submissions back to draft mode. This allows students to continue to make changes to their submission. This can be useful when a student has submitted an incorrect file or incomplete file or you want the student to make further additions/edits prior to submitting their assignment for marking.
1. Select individual or multiple submissions with the checkboxes in the Select column
  OR
  Select ALL with the checkbox in the Select column headers.
2. You can also choose to filter groups of students using the Select seperate groups drop down list or submissions status.
3. From the icons at the bottom of the page, click More and then select Revert to draft.
4. The status of the submission will now display as Draft (not submitted).
5. The original submission is still available, but the dropbox has now been re-opened for the student to update and re-submit their assessment.
You can add an individual override to an assignment to extend the due date for specific students. These must be entered individually.
1. Navigate to the assignment that requires an extension.
2. Click on More in the top menu banner and select Overrides.
3. From the drop down list, select User overrides.
4. Enter the name of the student, or select from the dropdown.
5. Adjust the due date and cut-off date settings as required.
6. Click Save, or Save and enter another override.
  Note: If you have several students that require overrides, consider adding them to a group so you can apply a Group override. For more information, see Extensions and Resubmissions.

2. You can also choose to filter groups of students using the Visible groups drop down list or submissions status using the Status dropdown list.
3. From the icons at the bottom of the page, select Grant attempt.
You can choose to lock student submissions which prevents any further changes. If a student didn't click the final Submit button, you can still mark their work by locking the submission.

3. You can also choose to filter groups of students using the Select seperate groups drop down list or submissions status using the Status dropdown list.
4. From the icons at the bottom of the page, select Lock/Unlock.

Quick grading

You can send messages to individual, multiple or groups of students via the assignment grading overview. For example, students who have not yet submitted after the deadline.
1. Select individual or multiple submissions with the checkboxes in the Select column
  OR
  Select ALL with the checkbox in the Select column headers.
2. You can also choose to filter groups of students using the Select seperate groups drop down list or submissions status by clicking on the Status dropdown at the top of the page.
3. From the icons at the bottom of the page, click More and then select Message.
4. A message pop-up window will appear.
5. Type your message into the box and when finished, click Send message to # people.
6. You’ll receive a green notification to confirm that the message was sent.
7. Sent messages and subsequent replies will now appear in your messages which can be accessed from the menu in the banner at the top of the page.
If enabled in the assignment settings, marking workflow allows students, tutors and lecturers to see the marking status (Not marked, In marking, Marking completed, In review, Ready for release, Released) of submitted assignments. Lecturers can review and moderate results and release feedback and grades to students once grading is completed. For more information, see Set up marker allocation and marking workflow.
1. Select individual or multiple submissions with the checkboxes in the Select column
  OR
  Select ALL with the checkbox in the Select column headers.
2. From the icons at the bottom of the page, click More and then select Change marking state.
3. The Set marking workflow window will appear, click Change marking state.
4. You will be redirected to a page which will display the students you selected.
5. From the drop down list, select the appropriate marking workflow state.
6. Click Save changes.
7. The selected students will now have the chosen workflow status in the Status column.
If enabled in the assignment settings, marker allocation allows you to assign marking of individual or groups of student assignments to markers. For more information, see Set up marker allocation and marking workflow.

2. From the icons at the bottom of the page, click More and then select Allocate marker.
3. The Set allocated marker window will appear, click Allocate marker.
4. You will be redirected to a page which will display the students you selected.
5. Select a marker from the Allocated Marker drop down list.
6. Click Save changes.
7. The marker's name will be displayed in the Marker column.
