Supplementary assessment

Supplementary assessments give eligible students another opportunity to pass a failed unit with a maximum result of 50 (P).

The Academic Board is responsible for determining the criteria for supplementary assessments and the Assessment Regime Procedure outlines the process.

Responsibility of the chief examiner

The chief examiner (or delegate) is responsible for:

  • designing the supplementary assessment to assess the failed learning outcomes.
    • This can take the form of a new assessment task, an alternative assessment or resubmission of one of the original assessment tasks (Refer to Section 1.5).
    • Where the supplementary assessment is in the form of a scheduled final assessment, it will be delivered as set out in the Scheduled Final Assessments Procedure (Section 2);
  • notifying students of the criteria by which their performance will be assessed;
  • marking the assessment according to set criteria; and
  • making feedback available to students.

Eligibility criteria

Students who meet all of the following criteria are eligible for supplementary assessments:

  • a mark of 45 to 49 for the unit and the grade is either N or NH. Students won’t be eligible for a supplementary assessment if they receive a grade of NGO or NSR.
  • the unit Handbook entry doesn't indicate that supplementary assessment is unavailable
  • students haven’t been granted a deferred or rescheduled deferred assessment for the unit
  • students don’t have a finding of academic misconduct with a zero mark penalty applied to an assessment task worth 20 per cent or more.

Students must be able to complete the supplementary assessment on the date it is scheduled and within 90 calendar days of the results release date.

Notifying students they are eligible

Students will be notified if they are eligible for supplementary assessments in their results release email. If they do not wish to complete some or all of their supplementary assessments, they can simply choose to not attend the exam or complete the assessment. Their mark will then be finalised based on the assessments they have completed for the unit.

Faculties can determine which students are eligible for supplementary assessment by running the Final Results report or the Final Results - (Select by unit cd wildcards) report (updated at the time of results release). This report is used to identify all students with non scheduled supplementary assessments. These two reports include a “NS_ELIGIBLITY” field which will show “Will be converted to NS” if the student is eligible for a supplementary assessment.

Faculties can use the Faculty Managed Supplementary Assessment Template as a sample email template to notify students of the details (date, type, venue, etc.) of the supplementary assessment being provided.

Where the student's result is finalised close to the 90 day time limit, the faculty must consider if this was due to administrative delays (section 5.8.2 Assessment Regime Procedure). If this is the case, the scheduling of the supplementary assessment can extend beyond the 90 day time limit but should still be completed as soon as possible.
