Supporting your students

Many students struggle with academic or personal issues which can impede learning, or create added stressors. While many students are aware of some of the support services available at the university for both academic and social support, some students are not, and others may be reluctant to contact support services for cultural or other reasons. There are a number of ways educators can support students to ensure they feel included and supported in their learning journey.

How to support your students

Share information about the available support services to students

Ensure students know where they can seek further support for both their studies and life at university by including relevant links on your Moodle sites, and by mentioning these services, and their benefits, where relevant in your classes.

Add a block to your Moodle site (if it is not there already) about Special Consideration, and regularly remind students to apply for this where required.

Get to know how Disability Support Services (DSS) can support you too

Read these testimonials from students who have used the services of DSS; their stories will help you understand some of the issues and barriers that students living with a physical disability, chronic health condition, or mental health condition may face at university.

DSS staff can also be contacted for advice on making accommodations and supporting students - whether this is generally or for a specific student. It is advised to ask the student in question if they are OK with you contacting DSS first, just so they are aware.

And finally, did you know that Moodle allows you to see the students who are registered with the DSS in your units, and what their accommodations are? To access this, head to the Administration block of your Moodle site, then click Reports Alternative Assessment Info.

Be open and encouraging

One of the best ways to support students is to educate yourself as much as you can about the diverse student community. This will help you to create a more inclusive learning environment. The links below, under What resources and services are available to students, provide a great overview of the challenges and barriers many of our students face.

Students registered with the DSS are not obliged to share the reasons why they need accommodations with you, but you can encourage all students to speak to you (or remind you) about any accommodations they may need if they wish throughout the semester.
