Amelia Nathania from the Education Excellence team in Monash Malaysia used “escape room” themed workshops, where participants work in a team against the clock to solve puzzles, to engage educators to improve their understanding of Feedback Literacy.
I first got the idea of an escape room back when I was an educator. Students often dread going for exam revision at the end of the semester. So I wanted to come up with something that is engaging, but at the same time helps them to reinforce their understanding.
I got the idea of an escape room through journals (see the Supporting resources section below for details). So I ran that escape room activity for my students, and I could actually see the joy my student experienced throughout the process. It really helped them remember the knowledge and the concepts that they learned throughout the semester through an active learning activity.
So when I came to this role as an educational designer, when we were trying to create an activity for educators I figured, since students and educators learn better when they are actively participating instead of sitting passively and just consuming all the information, why not try out the escape room activity as well?
I designed the questions according to the theme of the workshop that I'm running. So in this case of feedback literacy, I would have to design the questions and the puzzle around the feedback types, purpose, forms or the feedback cycle.
I will print out a set of questions and my colleagues will conduct a dry run on it just to see if the design works without any errors and everybody can complete within the time frame.
Once that's completed, I'll have to print out a number of sets based on how many participants are taking part for that day so that each group will get a set of questions before the activity.
I will start the activity by first going through the rules. I have a few slides which I use as an introduction just to set up the atmosphere. Like an actual escape room activity, they will sit you in a room and they will play a video or audio saying that you're currently trapped in this room, that there are puzzles which you are required to solve and you need to solve it within this time frame, good luck!
The escape room activity that I ran was an hour and had 8 puzzles. Every puzzle they're required to solve will result in possibly digit codes or letter codes which they can key into the digital lock (Google form) and if it's correct, it will bring it to the next puzzle that they have to solve. |
The result was amazing! I would say more than 95% of the participants truly enjoyed the experience. They engaged through collaborative activities and the feedback was very good.
I actually presented this initiative at the teaching and learning conference by Advance HE (Higher Education) on the impact and how much improvement there has been throughout the two years I've run the initiative, which also includes the feedback workshop, interactive online module, feedback showcase, feedback resource and the feedback escape room.
Seeing the engagement and excitement of participants cracking the puzzles and getting the code correct and proceeding to the next one, it gives me that satisfaction of all the work that I've done.
"Greatly appreciate and commend the creativity of tasks this time round. It was really fun and informative. Having to move around for two of the tasks were interesting."
"Although the venue setting does not resemble the actual escape room game, but I really enjoyed the games. I even thought that the use of Google form to key in the codes as brilliant. Thank you for developing the activities and organising this game for us."
"Thank you so much for such a grand design (with no hiccups, no bugs along the way). You should receive an Oscar for the number of beans in your brain. Incredible work!!!"

The great thing about this activity is that you can use the same template to run the escape room with different themes. I've run an escape room workshop in different streams of science, for example biology, chemistry and physics. At Monash, I've run workshops on feedback literacy and sustainability.
So you can download the Escape room template and can change it according to your workshop subject. Of course your creativity is the limit, you can come up with other types of puzzles too.
